Artist Research: Lucas Simeos
Lucas Simeos is my chosen research based photographer because i really like his work and also he relates to my theme of unusual portraiture. I really like his work on unusual portraiture because of how he makes his portrait looks like by either burning them, folding them and also cutting some part of them. I like the way he also describes his unusual portraiture as "strange" thing as he also focuses on just weird things which gave him his ideas on his type of portraiture by burning them. I also like the way in which he takes his portrait before burning them, he takes them straight without bending or changing the position of the camera. I also admire his work due to his to the lighting in his picture which is not to bright but also not to dark. I admire his work so much just because of how fascinating it is to take a portrait and then burn some parts of it which is really interesting and i also admire his work because of how it is easy to make a type of his own unusual portraiture but also adding your own type of effects.
Documentation
I choose 5 images from my website that i could use on my own experimentation based on the artist that influenced me the most. I choose 5 images which i thought really stood out to me because of either they are a bit unusual or either they have something to do different to the artist that influenced me which was Lucas Simões.
2These were the five images i used but the second one i took by myself. The first, third, fourth are different from Lucas Simões one because they are already unusual and are also different to the artist ideas. I choose the first one because i tried an experiment with it from a different artist called Stephen Shanabrook so i decided to use Lucas Simões on it.
The Making
The making wasn't hard except from choosing the images but all i had to do was select the images but also line them up and take pictures of me selecting them. I enjoyed focusing on making my own version of Lucas Simões experiment because it was really enjoyable but also it was a bit exciting to find out about the final outcomes and also how to improve them.
This are the pictures i got my brother to take of me doing the research and the making. The first image was when i placed them on the floor and looking at what to add to the images to be different to my chosen artist and then the second image was of me selecting images to print.
Final Outcomes
These were my final outcomes. I was really impressed because not only did i experiment but i also used Lucas Simões idea of unusual portraiture to make my own type of portraiture. The idea of burning some parts of the portrait was from Lucas Simões but i used different type of portraits that i have never seen Lucas used for example the black and white printed portraiture but with a shadow on the background. I really like the outcome of these portraits because of how i was able to apply Lucas Simões technique of taking his portraits of not to bright and not to dark. I also tried to use a different technique of using reflective portrait and defy his way of just taking portraits. I also used different images not just potraits.
This was my favourite image from my experiment because of how there is a cross in the middle. I didn't mean to burn a cross there. It was a coincidence that came out really well and i am really happy that it came out in between the eyes and the forehead. In the background of the burned cross it says "GIRL" which i just put in there in the background to make it look interesting and fascinating.
WWW: I was able to try out my own version of Lucas Simões unusual portraiture but with different techniques and i was also able to understand his concepts of his work on unusual portraiture.
EBI: I could have tried different techniques but also use different aspects of lighting.
