Introduction
My chosen theme was unusual portraiture because i am really interested in the theme and also because of how i can make normal portraits unusual with any type of objects for example scissors, tape, newspaper article, pins. I really like this theme because of how artist like Lucas Simeos use different objects that draws the viewer into the portraits like burning parts of the photograph and placing it under newspaper articles.
Lucas Simoes
Lucas Simoes is a Brazilian born photographer who is based in architecture and design. Simoes uses materials such as maps, books and photographs, which he then folds, cuts and make them into new form of images. He likes to create images with burnt part which he finds interesting and he also like "strange" things. After analysing his work i think i like his work a lot because of how he make layers and put a image on it and burns some part of it which is quite interesting and i also like the fact of how he hides the identity of the people in the image by burning it. I also like his pictures because it makes me fell like there is like an hidden meaning behind the images.
This are some or Lucas Simoes images. I like them because of how he keeps the identity of the people in the images private and i also like the images because of how the images look like there is an hidden meaning in the images. I think that his images are very good because of how he makes them and also the way he makes the images look after burning it and also the way it makes the viewer feel.
Gillian Wearing
Gillian Wearing is a British artist that is known for her method of exploring the everyday life through Photography and video within private and public spaces. She is best know for the way she takes her portrait by having portraits of people taken but with mask on their face. I like her portraits because of how she hides the identity of the people by wearing a mask and i also like her portraits because of the background in which she chooses to take her portraits.
These are Gillian Wearing portraits. Her portraits are amazing because when i first looked at one of her portraits i didn't know that they was wearing a mask until i saw a gap in between the person eyes. Her portraits are quite confusing because you can't see the person in the picture. I asked myself numerous questions about her portrait, for example: is the person in the portrait keeping a straight face, is there anything wrong with the person.
Stephen Shanabrook
Stephen Shanabrook is an American conceptual artist that is famous for his type of portraiture called "paper surgeries" which he makes by getting a photographs from either magazines or photographs and squashes them up and makes them into hideous creatures and also he destroys the identity of the people in the photographs. I like his works because of the way he makes his portraiture look like but because of also how easy it is to make a photographs like his but also the way he crumples, folds and creases the images which I find interesting and also because of how I personally find a shape in every of his images like square and triangles.
This are some of Stephen Shanabrook's 2paper surgeries". I like his work because of how you can kind of distinguish some parts of the images for example the teeth. I also like his work because of how it makes me feel and also because of how he folds them in a specific shape or in a specific way which i find interesting and also the fact that he makes the people in the images look like hideous creature.
Stephen Shanabrook Experiment
WWW: I was able to take portraits of different people and also was able to try out a new way of editing portrait. I also like the fact that the people looked different when the image was scrunched up compared to the normal portrait.
EBI: I took more pictures and also tried a different a different way of editing the portrait and also taking the images in a different way.

Reflective Portraiture
This are the portraits that i came up with "reflective portrait". I made these portraits by taking portraits of people then i uploaded them to a computer. I opened them on the computer screen and i then i took pictures of them reflecting to the window. I like this portraits because i was able to try out different ways of portraits and also it reflects which i find interesting and also there is a flash in it as well which is really interesting.
Wes Nauman
Wes Naman is an American artist who creates unusual portraiture. He makes his own portraiture with either rubber band or either with tape. He tapes people face withe tape and also put the rubber band around their face which makes it looks unusual. I like his way of taking unusual portraiture because it is quite interesting because with the tape or the rubber band on their face it is hard for me to imagine them without things on their face because of how the elastic band or tape already deformed their face into a hideous creature but also unusual and looks a bit weird when you look at it.
Wes Naman Experiment
This were my experiment on Wes Naman. I tried to use other objects other than tape but there was no other things i could use. I like the way i used the tape to wrap their face but also the way they look. I like the third and fourth picture because it really came out the way i wanted it to look because of the expression but also but also it makes them look unusual which was the way Wes Naman makes the people in his portrait. I also like the tone of the lighting because it is not to bright and also not to dark. I was trying to hide the nose in all of the portrait because if the nose is hidden then it makes look hideous and quite unusual but i didn't come out the way i want it to be. I can try this again by either trying to hide some part of their face or eyes or mouth.
Unusual Portrait Experiments
As homework for half term we had to do experiment based on our chosen term which was UNUSUAL PORTRAITURE. I had to focus on taking portraits in a fixed way like bending the camera. I tried to take pictures without no effect but i was finding it a bit hard to actually make it look unusual so i thought using Snapchat which really has good filters so most of the images were snapchat filters. I like the way the way i used the snapchat filters to make the portraits look unusual. The picture were the people in the portrait look different is because i added another image on their face using the filters which makes them look unusual. I liked the way these portrait came out because i wanted it to come from my point of view which was that i wanted to make the portraits look unusual and also a bit tricky to see.
WWW: I really liked the way the experiment went because it came out the way and also i was able to try and experiment with different type of filters
EBI: I could have tried to use different filters and also take more pictures of other people.

Single image evaluation
I see an unusual Portraiture and also I see lots of papers and faces in scattered frame but it looks 3D. I don't recognise everything but what I think about this picture that it is interesting and also has so much effects to it and also the lining and also the positioning of the paper, everything seems new to me in this picture as i have never seen any picture like this. This picture reminds me nothing as i have never seen anything like this before. This is meant to be an abstract because it has so much different aspect with it. I can't really see anything that stands out with the picture and although it is quite interesting but nothing stands out to me. I see all almost every formal elements i see lines, i see shapes and i also see colour, this was an interesting selection because it really made it stand out for other people. The photographer done nothing special on this picture except the fact that he just added more filters to the picture but it is also quite interesting because it plays the viewers eyes from different perspective like the Mona Lisa. The photographer has represented his picture as a foreground and this has a special effect on the picture because it is an interesting effect, i can't really tell how much time and space he had because the portrait don't really show anything it is also quite scrambled because i think he is trying to create an effect to the viewer and also cause a distraction to the viewer but i really like the work he is trying to portray because it is kind of a special work which i personally think deserves a lot of credit. I like his work because they can kind of create a illusion in the viewer eyes and also it creates a type of perspective which can play with the viewers imagination. I would want to know what was going through Lucas Simeos head when he was getting the idea to make this piece. If i could ever meet Lucas Simeos i would have asked if he had any inspiration from any inspiration from any other piece in order to help me understand the meaning of this photograph, I would also ask if they were any emotions from the man in the portrait because I can't really see it. After doing some bit of research on Lucas i found out that he loves "strangeness is something that fascinates me and to make it beautiful is even better". This quote now affects my understanding of this portrait that he is trying to make it strange but also beautiful as it is something tat fascinates him. I f i was to make this piece i would make it a bit personal as it is more abstract and you can't really see anything, i would use one of family members as they are personal. I would name it something to do with private like (Restricted excitement) as it is more personal which people can't really see. From what i have gathered from Lucas work i would infer that he wants to intervene in ordinary portraits and give them a new meaning. I think i would relate Lucas work to Gillian Wearing work on unusual portraiture even though they are both different i think i can relate them because they both have something to do with hidden identity as in Gillian's work you can't see the person as the person is behind a mask, Lucas work is the same but different ways as you can't tell what types of emotions are going through through the people in the portraits mind and also you don't know the identity of this people.
I am going to respond to his work by taking a portrait of someone then printing out different copies of the same portrait and then cut it out using a scissors to make different types of shape with it to make it look abstract. I am also going to print the portrait black and white and coloured to make it look unusual but in a different way to Lucas work. I would also like to make an exhibition taking an inspiration from his work by making different type of portrait from it and to get some of family members and also some of my peers to come to the exhibition so i can get how other people would react to my work which was an inspiration from him. I plan to achieve this by making different types of portrait and cutting them out by placing parts from other portraits of people face into different portraits. I would document the process of me making the portraits and also document when people attend my exhibition and i would also write the feedback from them and put it on my site as feedback from my work which was an inspiration from Lucas Simeos. I would also respond to his work by making a final piece from his work based from other unusual portraiture from him like burning some parts of his photograph and adding that to my first response based on his work on "Desmemorias" as i think it is one of the best work i have seen as it a concept of secrecy to it as you can't really infer what the meaning of the work is as it is hard to tell because of the shredded part has parts of the the face cut out and has an illusional triangle shape.Overall I think this piece is very good piece as it has all types of formal elements in it and that makes it a good piece. The portrait has an even tone as it is not to bright and it is not to dimmed. I found it hard to tell how bright the portrait was as it was hard to tell because most of the portrait you can't really see it properly.

Response to Lucas Simeos
This was one of my response to Lucas Simeos work. I printed two images of the same person coloured and black and white and then I cut it out measuring what sides i needed to cut. I cut it out and then stapled it together. This response is not like Lucas Simeos work because the identity of the person is not shown but the identity of the person in my response is shown as i wanted my response to his work to be different. For my next response i would make the work the same like shredding parts of the images and creating illusion.
Reflective Portraiture 2
This was another type of reflective photograph I done. I used a mirror to reflect peoples faces
Tate Modern Exhibition visit
As part of our research we had to go to a type of exhibition or a gallery. I choose to go to the Tate modern because it is a really excellent source for finding new artists and photographers but also all type of works to do with different topics on photography. I documented the journey of me going to the Tate modern.
The journey
Exhibition Photographs
This were the pictures i took of some art work i found very fascinating. I am really fascinated by the second image on the first horizontal row because of the way the circles are positioned but also because of how it looks like an hypnosis. I also like the fourth image because it is really abstract but also it has a lot of lines in it which creates triangles and also which creates a type of illusion on the viewer.
Artist I found out about

Final Piece Evaluation
For my final piece i decided to take an inspiration from Lucas Simeos. He is an artist i have been researching and i have also been researching his work. I decided to take an inspiration from him because i found his work on unusual portraiture really interesting because of how he makes them. He either burns them with fire or he prints same copies of the same portrait and cuts them then joins them together. My final piece was time consuming because i had to take portraits of different people then select the one i wanted to use. I also had to cut them out which wasn't really good as it was the first time that i had done something like that, i took pictures of what my first try was because i wanted to document the process of me getting to my final piece. I had numerous attempts but it didn't quite work out the way i wanted it to be. I was really persistent because i wanted to find a better way of cutting the triangles on the image. I found a better way of doing that through my persistence because i didn't like the way the first attempt and second attempt came out because they both came out messy andit wasn't good enough.
